Cáceres in a nutshell

The northern, most beautiful half of Extremadura, is called Cáceres province (pronounced Kaaaseres), with its identically named capital: Cáceres city.

The vast medieval centre of Cáceres has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Here is Cáceres in a nutshell:

  • Best described as a second 'Tuscany' (as it was thirty years ago).
  • One immense nature park, with strict land-use restrictions on 75% of its surface.
  • NO expatriate urbanisations, NO endless apartment blocks, NO mass tourism.
  • The northern part of Extremadura. Cáceres province, by itself as large as f.i. half of the entire Netherlands.
  • A population of some 470.000 friendly inhabitants, where speaking some Spanish is still essential for newcomers.
  • Lots of living space, spectacular nature, unpolluted air, dry land climate (= cool nights, even in high-summer!).
  • Modern infrastructure, 320+ days sunshine, friendly people, great wines at low prices.
  • Cherries, raspberries, fresh vegetables, all the fresh fruits you can think of do grow here.
  • Where meats still taste as they should taste.
  • Low living costs. Little traffic. Quiet modern road system. Driving a car here is fun!
  • Incredibly rich birdlife. Walking, trekking, riding, fishing, getting away from stress.
  • One of Europe's last secret hideaways, for the Happy Few.
  • Green. Sunny. Affordable. Quiet. Far from any madding crowd.
  • Varied landscapes. From quiet mountain valleys to small towns, to tranquil villages.
