Travel info: How to get to Extremadura

Below is an overview of the different ways to travel to Extremadura from the UK:

By plane

Driving times from airports:
From Valladolid: 3 hours
From Lisbon: 2 - 2,5 hours
From Madrid: 3,5 - 4 hours
From Seville: 3 hours max.
From Jerez: 4 hours max.
From Malaga: 6 hours max.

Although the driving times may seem long, the roads are empty, in comparison to roads in the UK, and good, making driving a pleasure again.

Why not try Lisbon Airport? Lisbon is 2 hours on the motorway to the westernmost part of the province of Cáceres on the border with Portugal. The motorways are toll motorways in Portugal and most Portuguese drive straight through the tolls as they have an electronic tag – so remember to pick up a ticket or you will be fined when you reach the pay booth! Air Portugal fly from Gatwick or Heathrow, BA from Heathrow and Monarch (scheduled) from Gatwick.

British Airways/Iberia fly to Madrid or Seville from Heathrow or Gatwick and to Madrid from Manchester and Birmingham direct. BA also provide connecting flights from other regional airports.

RyanAir fly to to Santander, Valladolid, Seville, Jerez and Faro.

EasyJet fly to Madrid from Bristol, Luton, Gatwick, and Liverpool. EasyJet also fly to Malaga from Belfast, Bristol, Liverpool, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Newcastle and Nottingham (East Midlands).

Iberia fly from Madrid to Badajoz.

Other airlines that fly similar routes are:

Air Berlin from Stansted to Seville or Jerez
BMI from Heathrow to Madrid
BMI Baby from Nottingham (East Midlands), Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester or Durham Tees Valley to Malaga
Monarch from Manchester to Madrid and from Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton or Manchester to Malaga
Thomson Fly from Bournemouth, Coventry and Doncaster/Sheffield to Malaga
Jet2 from Leeds Bradford or Manchester to Malaga
My Travel Lite from Birmingham to Malaga

If you fly to Madrid, you may prefer to catch a train to Cáceres at a cost of Euros 25,50 one way from Atocha Station, you'd have to reserve your seat which one can do online (www.renfe.es). There is also an overnight train from Madrid (Chamartin) to Lisbon and vice versa with stops in Caceres and Valencia de Alcántara.

If you are hiring a car from the airport, you can often get a better deal booking car hire with flight together, using an online agent such as www.expedia.co.uk or www.opodo.co.uk.

By car

Driving down from Bilbao: Take the E70 west to Santander, then the N611 south to Palencia. Take the E80 to Valladolid and Salamanca, then the N630 south to Cáceres. The drive to Caceres takes about 7 hours.

From Madrid, take the NV -E90 west to Talavera de la Reina, direction Portugal. This quiet motorway's trajectory passes Trujillo, Mérida (where one can go South to Sevilla on the brand-new A-66) or continue on to Badajoz and Portugal. At Trujillo, turn right to Cáceres (45 kms) and follow the signs for Plasencia - Salamanca.

Our office is located ten kilometres north of Cáceres very near the N630 Ruta de la Plata. Please give us a call when you reach Cáceres, so we can explain to you where to pick you up on the N630.
