A little-known fact about the 2nd Century Roman Bridge at Alcántara is that it was restored in 1812 by order of the Duke of Wellington, as the bridge had suffered serious damage during a battle here in 1809 during the Peninsular War.

A really fabulous quiet + peaceful location, lots of possibilities, lots of fertile soil for growing one's own, many mature fruit trees, a horse stable, various meadows, commercial possibilities as well, as B&B or small country inn, situated within sight of the main through-road to Portugal.
